ALTERNATIVE PROVISION

When school isn’t working,
learning still can.

Interim, one-to-one alternative provision for learners who are out of school or need a different route back into education, with a clear focus on re-engagement, progress and what comes next.

Re-engage. Rebuild.
Return.

Many learners referred for alternative provision have had difficult experiences of education. We start by building a trusting relationship, then gradually increase the focus on learning, with a planned route back into school, into a new setting or on to post-16 education, employment or training.

01

Re-engagement and mentoring

Sessions built around the learner’s interests to rebuild confidence, routine and a positive relationship with learning.

02

Core learning

English and maths, plus wider curriculum subjects where agreed, pitched at the right level and linked to the learner’s targets.

03

Qualifications and next steps

Where appropriate, we discuss qualification pathways such as Functional Skills or GCSEs and support planning for college, apprenticeships or training.

04

Reintegration and transition

A planned, gradual move into the next setting, with handover information so the receiving school or college can continue what works.

COMMON REASONS FOR REFERRAL

Different circumstances.
One clear plan.

Alternative provision is arranged for many reasons. Whatever the starting point, every placement has a purpose and a planned next step.

  • Permanent exclusion
  • Suspension lasting more than five days
  • At risk of exclusion
  • Health needs, including anxiety
  • Emotionally based school avoidance
  • Awaiting a school place
  • EHCP placement breakdown
  • Part-time or reduced timetable
  • Moving into the area
  • Children looked after

Section 19 and EOTIS: what’s the difference?

Under Section 19 of the Education Act 1996, local authorities must arrange suitable education for children of compulsory school age who would not otherwise receive it because of illness, exclusion or other reasons. This is usually temporary. Where a child has an EHCP and the local authority agrees that a school or college would be inappropriate, it can arrange education otherwise than in school (EOTIS) under Section 61 of the Children and Families Act 2014, set out in Section F of the plan.
